Advanced Functions MHF4U Logarithm Laws and Exponent Laws By: Greg Leverton and Girthiga Gunarajah

Goals and Expectations By the end of the lesson students will be able to Laws of exponents and laws of logarithm How are laws of exponents are related to the laws of logarithms How to use the laws to simplify expressions Prior Knowledge What exponents are and how to solve them What logarithms are and how to solve them What the graphs of exponential and logarithmic functions look like The laws of exponents

Agenda Review Activity 1 Energizer Activity 2 Wrap-up

Bell Work Write down the laws of exponents that was previously learned Product Quotient Exponent

Minds-On Logarithm Applet Students will work on slide 3

Teaching Plan - Overview Activity 1 Investigating the Laws of Logarithms Energizer Zip, Zap, Zop Activity 2 Find the Connection

Activity 1 – Investigating the Laws The purpose of this activity is to introduce the laws they know for exponents (product, quotient and exponent) to logarithms Using the Logarithms Applet students will investigate the three logarithm laws Within their table groups they will discuss the laws and write down the laws into their math notebooks Quick Consolidation: One member from the table group will come up and write down the law requested

Energizer Zip, Zap, Zop A quick break between the two activities that will “wake up” the students Refer to lesson plan for complete instructions

Activity 2 – Find the Connection The purpose of this activity is for students to understand the relationship between the previously learned exponent laws and the logarithm laws Using the worksheet, as a table group, students will work through the worksheet trying to derive the exponent law from the logarithm law they just discovered

Consolidation Students will come up to the SmartBoard and write out the steps for the derivations they just completed for the product and quotient law Pose the question, so what is the connection between the exponent laws and the logarithm laws? Ticket out the door Write down at least one law that you learned today? What questions do you still have?

Optional Home Activity Challenge Problem Derive the power law for exponents from the power law for logarithms Hint: Refer back to Activity 2 – Worksheet
