Course Overview & Requirements MATH 72 & 97

The first 3 days only, please sign the appropriate attendance roster near the door. If you are on a wait list, please keep coming each day and sign the roster. I’ll be able to tell you on the 3 rd day if you can get in.

Primary “instructor” : the Hawkes computer courseware. NOT a distance education class rather a “hybrid” course. All assignments and tests: completed on the computer. No lectures, but I can assist if you need help.

While there are deadlines for assignments and tests, students find this format a bit more flexible. All work except TESTS can be done at home or on other campus computers. It is a good way to review materials that you learned in the past.

Many students are more successful in a structured, lecture environment. While there is an instructor available to help, you are responsible for learning the material via computer courseware. There are no scheduled lectures.

You like learning on your own. The material you are learning is, for the most part, a review of material you have had in the past but have forgotten. You are VERY self-motivated.

Wrong course? Is the material too easy or too hard? Please see me. Lecture course better? Check immediately for any open sections and make the change. (Unfortunately, by the time the quarter starts, many courses are already full.) More information about math placement and Sample Entrance Exams? Please visit:

New to Hawkes? Attendance the first 3 days is REQUIRED. After week 1 only required attendance is for TESTS. TESTS must be taken in class during your scheduled class time. Attendance is NOT part of your grade.

This is where you will go to access the Hawkes program each day.

Certify lessons Pre-Tests Tests Final Exam

A Certify is homework due almost daily. You may miss a certain number of questions and still pass. About 80% of the problems must be correct. Missing more than the allowed number of questions, requires starting over with a new assignment. No penalty exists for starting over. Go back to Instruct and Practice to review the material again. When you do complete the assignment, your grade is 100%. (Make sure it’s on time; Tests may only be taken if ALL certifies are complete.)

Part of your grade! May not be taken after the deadline. A grade of 0 will be recorded for both Pre-test and Test. A preparation for the actual test (i.e., Pre-Test 1 prepares for Test 1). No password is required. May take multiple times. Highest grade recorded. May be taken at any computer.

IMPORTANT: ALL Certifies must be complete before you are allowed to take the actual test.

 Must be taken IN CLASS and during YOUR CLASS time.  May be taken any class day BEFORE or ON the test deadline.  Needs a PASSWORD!!!  May be taken once you have completed:  All required certifications for that test.  The Pre-Test with a score of 70%.  Sign in with your instructor at the beginning of class to take a test.

 Must be taken IN CLASS and during YOUR scheduled final exam class time.  May be taken Early: You may take your Final Exam during your scheduled class time any class day BEFORE Study Day.  May be taken once you have completed:  All required certifications for the quarter.  All Pre-Tests.
