What is eCLASS for Students?  Students can access assignments and academic help anytime, online.  Digital Tools expand the walls of the classroom  Foster Collaboration  Nurture Creativity & Innovation eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Some Things to Know  GCPS is not adopting eCLASS; GCPS is creating eCLASS along with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  First pieces have begun and more will be phased in as created over the next several years.  Shiloh Middle is PILOT SCHOOL. eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

 We are creating eCLASS. We are phasing in models and trying new things.  There is much room to grow and challenges to overcome.  It is not a technology initiative. It is a teaching and learning initiative emphasizing 21 st century skills such as collaboration, creativity, and communication. What does it mean to be a “pilot”? eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

What is it NOT  An automated teacher or automated curriculum (it doesn’t teach)  Technologically overwhelming  Primarily a technology initiative eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Our next step is BYOD  B ring Y our O wn D evice is a popular and expanding phenomenon in American schools.  Our data indicate many students have access to technology outside of school – which we tell them to turn off when they arrive in class. eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

What is Shiloh Middle piloting related to BYOD?  Access to this program is begin rolled out slowly over three years  Teacher access to the network with personally owned devices (Internet)  Limited access by students to the network for Internet on personally owned devices  A letter will be sent home if your student’s teacher will be setting up a BYOD classroom with student access during lessons eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

What kind of access will students have?  Internet access similar to what they have when they log on to a school computer  We will have some school-owned devices in classrooms.  Devices may not have all the software students are used to, and all websites don’t run correctly on all devices. eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Examples of Classroom Use  Taking Pictures for a research project  Playing Academic Games  Using teacher approved apps and websites during approved instructional times  Texting Response to teacher questions  Reading Independently  Blogging Reader Response  Interactive Note Taking  Typing Writing Samples eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Common devices  Laptops and netbooks  Tablet devices such as Nexus 10, Microsoft Surface, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2  eReaders such as Kindles, Nooks, etc.  Android and Windows Smart Phones  Apple: iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, iPod Touch, iPhone  Cell phones for voice recording, photos, videos eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Considerations  Price  Risk of loss or damage  Data (saving, storage space, data plan)  Ruggedness  Clarity  Response time  Operating system  Plays Adobe Flash?  Keyboard  Memory required  Battery life  Available apps eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Preparing Your Student  Can your student do the following?  Access a Wi-Fi network from the device  Launch the Web browser  Navigate using the Web browser  Bookmark websites and go to sites using the bookmarks  Participation is optional and limited to specific lessons designated by the teacher  Use of non-approved devices or unapproved websites and/or apps may result in consequences eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.

Next Steps  If your student’s teacher will be setting up a BYOD classroom, please review the letter that comes home  Review the Shiloh Middle BYOD Guidelines (parent tab at shilohms.com)  A Personally Owned Device Release Form must be completed (parent tab at shilohms.com)  Questions? Contact your student’s teacher or the Curriculum AP Jay Barbour, eCLASS & B.Y.O.D.
