EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS The SYSCO Perspective NSHCP Ltd. Educational Showcase 2006 Finding the Right Path

SYSCO Business Continuity Plan SYSCO Pandemic Business Continuity Guide SYSCO Canada has prepared a SYSCO Pandemic Business Continuity Guide for all Canadian OPCOs. SYSCO has extensive Business Continuity Plan (BCP) already in place. Need to consider additional challenges unique to flu pandemic. Pandemic Task Force SYSCO Atlantic has established a Pandemic Task Force to ensure all factors are considered in the pandemic planning process.

SYSCO Pandemic Task Force SYSCO Pandemic Task Force goals: Identify essential business activities including people and skills to keep them running. Identify suppliers and products that are key to our business and identify alternates if available in case of shortages. Develop protocols to minimize illness to employees and customers.

Variables to consider Border Closures Canada/USA? Supplier Stock Levels and Fill Rates? Storage Space at SYSCO SYSCO has an average of 3 weeks of inventory in stock. We have the ability to order a bit extra, but have limited ability to stockpile huge amounts. SYSCO purchases and replenishes products based on average volumes. Sudden spikes in product volumes that are not forecasted may cause shortages.

Pandemic Planning Considerations… All facilities should have some type of emergency plan. Where possible, keep some stock on hand in case of disaster. Dont wait till the last minute! Ensure all products on your emergency menu are listed and stocked in sufficient quantities at SYSCO. Build product and brand flexibility into your plan.

Pandemic Planning Considerations… CommunicateCommunicateCommunicate!!! Communicate,Communicate,Communicate!!! anticipated volumes to your key vendors and SYSCO. Suppliers may need advanced notice to increase production to meet higher demand. Distributors will need advanced notice to increase stock levels on key products. Once you invoke your pandemic plan, you will need to commit to using these products.

SYSCOs Commitment Commitment from SYSCOs Senior Management that Health Care will receive priority service. SYSCO will have mapped extensive Pandemic BCPs and will continue to service customers to the highest possible standard. We cannot promise that our service levels will remain unaffected during these difficult times, but we WILL be prepared to deal with these situations should they arise.

ConclusionConclusion Urge all suppliers, distributors and customers in the supply chain to consider their own BCPs. We need to communicate with each other at all levels of the supply chain with respect to pandemic planning. The strength of the Food Industry during a Pandemic Situation depends it! SYSCO can assist with lists of ready to use products, stock lists and sample emergency menus. Contact us for assistance!
