Defining Characteristics of Statehood 1) Annexation, US-Mexican War, Immigration 2) Timeline 1) 1845 – Texas Annexed as 28th state of the US 2) 1861 – Texas Secedes from the Union & the Civil War Begins

Events that led to the US Mexican War 1) Mexico took annexation of Texas by the US as an insult. 2) Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo -Dispute of new border – Rio Grande vs. Nueces River – Mexico ….shed American blood on American soil. 3) US wanted Pacific ports – Manifest Destiny

Reasons for added territory to the US between ) Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo – Mexican Cession – added California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Population increased by 100,000 2) 3) Population Growth – 1) Republic of Texas encourage immigration by extending land grants to more people in a system similar to the Empresario system
