Lesson 2B: Christ in the Old Testament

Hosea 12:10 “I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.”

Each Group has a Prophet Think of as many ways as you can in which the Prophet and his Ministry are similar to Christ and His Ministry Doesn’t have to be an exact match Compare Roles, Trials, Callings, Teachings, etc Think about symbols (numbers, images, places, etc) No wrong answers! Points for Creativity

Adam Son of God - Moses 6:22 Father of Mankind (Christ is Father of all Spirits) Helped Create the Earth Tempted by Satan in Person Commanded to Sacrifice (represents Christ) – Moses 5:5 Fall leads to Atonement, creates need for Christ

Abraham/Isaac Sacrifice of Son Isaac was a willing participant (prob adult, around 30 yrs old) Isaac carried his own wood (Christ bore his cross) Isaac was first born Son

Joseph of Egypt Firstborn Son of Jacob (Israel) and Rachel Held birthright Sold into slavery, allowed him to eventually save his family (and all of House Israel) Sold for pieces of Silver by Judah (Judas in Greek)

Moses Moses and Christ fasted 40 days and nights (Ex 34: 28) “Blood of Lamb” over doorway saved Israel Saved people out of bondage Turned water into wine (First public miracle) – Ex 7:20 Control over waters Transfigured on a mountain

Elisha/Elijah Performed many of the same miracles: Naaman cleansed of leprosy Fed 100 men with 20 loaves and had left over Raised the dead, specifically widows’ sons Elijah means “Jehovah is my God” Elisha means “God of Salvation

Jonah Sent on a mission from God Sleeping in boat when storm came He caused water to calm In the belly of the fish for 3 days, 3 nights

Is this a coincidence? Do you think these stories were chosen to be recorded by Old Testament prophets on purpose?

Notebook Ideas What other stories/prophets can you think of in the Old Testament or elsewhere in the scriptures that are a similitude of Christ? How can you become a similitude of Christ in your personal lives?
