Course Scope This one-year course is designed to assist and support mainstreamed students in their classes. Support and assistance will be provided to the students in completing homework, developing study habits, and communicating with the people involved in the education program. Communications between the student, parents, mainstream teachers, school officials, and the study skills teacher are very important to the success of the program. This course will fulfill one of the elective credits required for graduation.

English Translation This course will help you be more successful in high school by teaching you the best and most efficient methods for staying organized, taking notes and more.

Needed Supplies Binder or Spiral Notebook Journal USB (flash) drive 1GB or more 2 pencils (preferably #2 pencils) Pens: Red and Blue/Black Homework (if applicable) Reading Material Highlighters (2 colors)

Class Goals Participate in student-led tutorial sessions twice a week, within the school day, during the STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS elective class. During the tutorial sessions, STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS students may bring questions from any of their other classes. The tutors may be college students, experienced STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS students or college graduates. Become familiar with colleges from across the nation through participation in field trips, college presentations and research. Learn to become organized, thus promoting success in all classes. All STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS students follow specific guidelines for maintaining an effective STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS binder.

Class Goals Enroll in honors and advanced placement (AP) courses. Even if an STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS student never envisioned challenging him/herself by taking rigorous courses, the additional support of the STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS program will assist in building the confidence and study skills necessary to excel in such courses. Become involved members of campus clubs, activities and sports. Such involvements not only provide for an overall better high school experience, but they also provide for a more competitive college resume.

Class Goals Other activities as assigned by Your Teacher. (Classroom clean-up, projects, and essays.) Our STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS follows a team Socratic method approach. The class is split evenly and assigned an 11 th Grade Student Tutor. The STUDY SKILLS/FOCUS student works daily with the Tutor and the tutor clarifies unknowns with the teacher. Develop and maintain a positive relationship with EACH teacher on your schedule.

Tardy Policy Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, the Legacy High School Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced. Legacy utilizes a Tardy Lockout System. Any tardy student will be sent to the Tardy Table to get a tardy pass. The tardy is recorded by the teacher and the school. The student’s parent/legal guardian must sign the student in the next day in the Dean’s Office, or the student is placed on an RPC.

Grading Scale Description of Grading Policy: –Citizenship/Participation: 15% –Classwork: 30% –Projects: 25% –Homework: 30%

A Note on Participation Classroom participation is 15% of your grade. Participation is NOT just coming to class every day!

Participation means: you attend class regularly take notes keep your work up-to-date raise your hand to answer questions volunteer to read work as a group member and in general contribute to the class in some manner other than simply sitting in your seat.

Make-up Work (NRS and CCSD Regulations and Policy 5113) Make-up procedures – (After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with the teacher(s) to obtain appropriate makeup work within three school days immediately following the absence. Once contact has been made with the teacher(s), specific makeup work must be completed and returned to the teacher(s) within a reasonable length of time, to be determined by the teacher and communicated to the student/parent or legal guardian. The makeup work must be returned to the teacher(s) by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged.

Other Absolutely NO food or drink in the room (bottled water only)! It attracts ants, cockroaches, earwigs, scorpions, spiders and other undesirable creatures. Passes are given to the nurse and restroom only. Passes are NOT given to visit other teachers. One student out of the room at a time. Candy and gum are not permitted in class for the reasons given above. Plus, they tend to create a sticky mess regardless of how careful you are.

Other All personal property is the responsibility of the student. School property that is given to a student is the student’s responsibility to care for and return when requested. Lost textbooks and other materials will result in fines. No nuisance items. Nuisance items can and will be confiscated. Nuisance items include, but are not limited to: walkmans, headphones, gameboys, pagers, skateboards, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, hackeysacks, pictures and photographs.

Other Note on cell phones: CCSD policy allows students to have cell phones, iPhones, etc. but they must be turned to either OFF or SILENT during class time. Cell phones and such that go off during class will be confiscated.

Late Work Late work will be accepted but will be penalized 20%. If you are absent you have 2 class periods to turn in your missing work otherwise it becomes late.

No Name Work Gets tossed in the trash… No exceptions!

RESPECT THE CLASSROOM This Means: –Throw garbage in the garbage can –No writing on desks or chairs –No food, drink, or gum in the class –Do not touch posters, flags etc.

RESPECT STUDENTS This Means: –Keep hands, feet and comments to yourself –Do not touch things that are not yours –Be respectful when another student is speaking etc.

RESPECT STAFF This Means: –Any adult in the classroom –No cursing –Respect my property –Stay in your seat, etc.

What if I have to… Use the bathroom? Sharpen my pencil? Blow my nose? Get a tardy pass? Borrow paper or a pen? Throw something away? See the nurse?

What if I have to… Use the bathroom? –Go during the passing period! –You need to have your agenda with you –YOUR AGENDA! –Fill it out in ink! –Wait until I am free (not during a lecture etc.) –I will sign your agenda and give you the longhorn –I time you and will write you up if you are gone too long.

What if I have to… Sharpen my pencil? –Wait until I am done speaking and ask me if you may sharpen your pencil. –Do not abuse the sharpener or it will vanish…

What if I have to… Blow my nose? –Wait until I am done speaking and raise your hand. –Throw it in the TRASH –If your nose is bleeding get up and get a tissue right away.

What if I have to… Get a tardy pass? –If you are not in the classroom when the bell rings you are late and must get a tardy pass. –No pass, no entry to class!

What if I have to… Borrow paper or a pen? –Come see me when I am not speaking or during the beginning of class. –I keep track and you will lose participation points if you never have paper and pencil.

What if I have to… Throw something away? –Wait until I am done speaking and ask to toss it in the trash… –This is NOT a basketball court. WALK over and put it in the trash. I don’t care how good your three point shot it… I really don’t.

What if I have to… See the nurse? –Wait until I am done speaking and ask me –I need a reason to put on there –You bring me back the yellow sheet. –If you feel like you are going to throw up let me know ASAP!

Discipline I follow the school discipline plan –I talk to you about your behavior –I send you next door for the remainder of class –I talk to your parents about your behavior –I give you detention because of your behavior –You see your counselor –You go to the dean’s office
