5 Interesting Facts About our Colony: The Dutch West India Company sent the first group of Dutch settlers to colonize the New Netherlands, a region that would later become the state of New York.

More Facts The New Netherlands Colony became an international port town and the center of New Netherlands.

Another Fact The Dutch West India Company could not tolerate the old governor Kieft’s attacks on the Indians. His attacks could have caused Indian retaliation and endangered New Netherlands.

Last 2 Facts The English wanted to take over New Netherlands because it was located between the existing English colonies of New England and Virginia. The settlements of New Netherlands were given to the English Duke of York, who had ordered the attacks on New Amsterdam, thus giving the region its present name: New York.
