History timeline By Aliana Lewis

th of January. Australia was called New Holland. William Dampier explored the mapped parts of New Holland/ Australia. Reported that it was a dry empty and barren. He was unimpressed by the lack of water and what he described as the unhappiest people in the world.

1770 Captain James Cook found Australia. He reported that it was a green and beautiful country unlike William Dampier’s less positive reports. Claimed it for England.

1788 First Fleet arrived on the beach of Botany Bay, NSW. Around 722 convicts on board including over 17 children convicts. The jails were too filled so English people decided to start sending some people over to New Holland for up to 20 years.

1789 White people started decimating indigenous populations. Lots of aboriginals were forced to wear chains around their necks to stop them from escaping the horrible lives they were forced to live. Indigenous children were ripped from their mother’s arms. Indigenous people were forced to work as slaves for white people.

1960 Sir Macfarlane Burnet won Australian of the year. For winning the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

1980 Ahn Do came to Australia on a boat as a refugee. Now is a really successful Author and comedian.

1990 Cathy Freeman won Australian of the year for being the first aboriginal Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Born in Mackay, QLD. Inspired other aboriginals by winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Currently ranks as the 6 th fastest 400M sprinter of all time.

2000 Cathy Freeman won a gold medal in the Olympics for sprinting.

2004 I was born!!!!! I was born in Coolum, QLD
