“The Pilgrims, Puritans, Religion, Dissent, and the Natives”

EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?

We’ve already talked about the differences between the settlers of Jamestown and the first people who settled in New England (the “Pilgrims”): Purpose for coming? Difference in who they brought? Difference in what they brought? Difference in levels of “success”? Difference in population levels? EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?

First things first: THE PILGRIMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES? This picture is probably very inaccurate!

What in the world is a “Pilgrim?” Well, to answer that question, you have to understand a lot about religion (especially the difference between Catholics and Protestants!—AGAIN!) 1530’s: King Henry VIII declares himself the leader of the Church of England (defying the Pope and the Catholic denomination of Christianity) EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?

By the early 1600’s, some people wanted to change the Church of England because it looked like the Church of England kept too much of the Catholic rituals and traditions. In other words, they wanted to “purify” the Church of England from within—therefore, they became known as “Puritans.” Some Puritans thought that was impossible and wanted to break altogether—they become known as “Separatists”—one of their groups become known as the Pilgrims EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?

The Pilgrims were the group that came over on the Mayflower—from Holland (even though they were English)—they signed on with the “Virginia Company” to settle in Jamestown Before they got off the boat, they thought they might have a problem and tried to fix it before they got to land: Not everyone on the Mayflower was a “Pilgrim”…. Checkpoint #1: What kind of problems would the Pilgrims have had if they would’ve gotten off the boat with a bunch of “non-Pilgrims?” EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?

The Pilgrims signed what will become known as the “Mayflower Compact”: What it says:

Checkpoint #2: What is the importance to the Mayflower Compact to the future of the American Colonies? EQ: HOW DID RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND DISSENT INFLUENCE THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES?
