Presentation transcript:

 Protestant Christians that were called Pilgrims or Separatists  They were unhappy with the policies of the Church of England  Tried to escape religious persecution (treated harshly)  They first fled to Holland and then in 1620 decided to head to America on a boat known as the Mayflower.

 They were trying to go to Virginia, but a storm blew them off course and they landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts (Cape Cod)

 Since there was no government set up in Plymouth they created the Mayflower Compact before getting off the boat.  It was a social contract that established a SELF GOVERNING colony  Written and signed in 1620

 Another group of English Protestants came to practice their religion without persecution.  Puritans wanted to “purify” the Church.  Landed in Massachusetts Bay (North of Plymouth)  Wanted to establish a “City Upon a Hill” – a symbol of goodness and virtuous living for all the world to see
