Warm Up September 27, What is matter? 2.What are the different types (not states) of matter? 3.What branch of science is the study of matter?

is anything with mass and volume that is made of ATOMS Section 2.1 Notes: Matter

…a quick review… MASS: a measure of the amount of matter present (measured in grams) VOLUME: a measure of the amount of space something occupies (measured in m 3 or liters)

Matter can be found as: ELEMENT  a pure substance made of ONE kind of atom. COMPOUND  substance made from the atoms of 2 or more different elements that are stuck together (bonded). Elements are found on the periodic table.

element or compound? sulfur

element or compound? Water, H 2 O

element or compound? helium

element or compound? salt, NaCl

element or compound? aluminum

MIXTURES Mixtures are composed of more than one type of substance mixed together. In a homogeneous mixture, the mixture looks uniform throughout – Examples: salt water, lemonade, chocolate ice cream – Also called solutions In a heterogeneous mixture, the mixture is not uniform – Examples: trail mix, granite, chocolate chip ice cream

homogeneous or heterogeneous? Granite

homogeneous or heterogeneous? Lemonade

homogeneous or heterogeneous? Greek Salad

homogeneous or heterogeneous? ketchup

homogeneous or heterogeneous? Chocolate Chip Cookie

homogeneous or heterogeneous? Brass (mixture of copper and zinc

Classification of Matter

Kool Aid element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture?

Silver element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture?

Sand element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture?

Carbon Dioxide element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture?
