The elderly people in our society

OLD AGE:  In academic terms, we can talk about the “old age” or “senior citizens” when referring to people aged above 65.  Old age consists of ages nearing or surpassing the average life span of human beings, and thus the end of the human life cycle.

PHYSICAL CHANGES: n General physical decline n Less active n Wrinkles and liver spots on the skin n Change of hair colour to gray or white n Hair loss n Lessened hearing n Diminished eye sight n Slower reaction times and agility n Difficulty recalling memories n Lessening or cessation of sex n Bone diseases: osteoarthritis

Life expectancy: In most parts of the world, women life, on average, longer than men. In most parts of the world, women life, on average, longer than men.

Psycho-social aspects: Erik Erikson’s “Eight Stages of Life” theory says: n Human personality is developed in a series of eight stages. n Period of “Integrity vs. Despair” n Unsuccessful people feel that their life has been wasted. n Those who feel proud of themselves feel a sense of integrity.

THE OLD WISE PEOPLE n During prehistory, the elderly were respected and were highly praised for the mere fact of surviving. n In the Egyptian civilization, the elderly represented experience and wisdom. n In modern times, the elderly are not positively valued in most contemporaneous societies.

Back in my days, things were different!!! n Elderly people use this phrase when talking about “their days”. n This phrase cause prejudice among young people regarding older generations. n Throughout the years, the way people relate to each other has changed a lot.

Friends!...we need to recognize that… n Elderly people are the backbone of modern society. n They are not different than the rest of us. n No body have the right to tell them what to do or how to live their lives. n They teach us the value of unconditional love.

Elderly people in our modern society Elderly people have many skills and much experience to offer to us. They are able to offer us years of experience in all manner of subjects. Elderly people are able to support us in so many ways. They are very important in our modern society; they are mostly the reason for our existence.

Elderly people need your help and care They need to live in peace and in harmony. They need to live in peace and in harmony. They need to receive medical attention, psychological and social care. The majority of elderly people suffer from arthritis, back pain, lack of mobility, and other debilitating physical conditions which require care.
