Unit 13: Hobbies Listening Before you listen. What are the benefits of reading books? 1. knowledge. 2. relaxation/ recreation 3. improving the language skills. 4. the easiest way to learn. 5. the cheapest way to travel. 6. enrich our imagination/ mind.

Listen and repeat. magazines Profitably (adv): c ó l ợi, thuận lợi. Continually (adv): liên tục, không ngớt. Available (adj):có thể có được. Otherwise (adv): bằng không, nếu không thì Bygone (adj): qúa khứ, đã qua. Gigantic (adj): khổng lồ, to lớn. Ignorantly (adv): ngu dốt.

Task 1: True or false? 1. T he writer started his hobby when he was young. =My hobby got started when I was a little boy. 2. His parents were interested in reading fairy tales and other stories to him. =I had always wanted my parents to read fairy tales and other stories to me. Soon they got fed up with having to read to me continually. T F

True or false? 3. The writer didn’t start with ABC books. = I started with simple ABC books. 4. Now he reads all the books available. = Now I read just about anything that is available. F F

5. Reading helps the writer to know many things. = Reading enables me to learn about so many things. 6. According to the writer, by reading he does not have to study hard. =The wonderful thing about reading is that I don’t have to learn things the very hard way. T T

7. The writer is able to know about a tiger through reading. = Also I do not have to go deep into the jungle to find out about tigers. I can read all about it in a book. 8. Books might help him in his daily life. = They have certainly helped me in my daily life. T F

Task 2. Write the missing words. The (1) ……… thing about reading is that I do not have to learn things the very hard way. For example, I do not have to catch a (2) ……… to know that it can kill me. I know the danger, so I can avoid it. Also I don’t have to go deep into the (3) ……... to find out about tigers. I can read all about it in a book. Books provide the readers with so many facts and so many information. They have certainly helped me in my daily life. I am better equipped to (4) ………. with living.
