First Coast Guard District Bridge Administration January 2008 Auxiliary Brief

Program Description Bridge Administration is a Coast Guard regulatory program which seeks to protect the reasonable needs of navigation while balancing the needs of competing modes of transportation. This is accomplished through the Coast Guard’s bridge permitting, drawbridge regulation, navigational lighting, bridge construction oversight and civil penalty authorities. There are approximately 2,000 bridges over navigable waters of the United States within the First District; 200 movable bridges.
