Creating a respectful, responsible and safe school   Purple Outstanding Dark Blue Great Job Light Blue Good Day Green Ready to Learn Yellow Think about it Orange Teacher’s Choice Red Parent Contact Croft has a school wide Behavior Plan. Promotes positive behavior. Student choices are tracked on a Clip Chart. All students begin the day on green in the middle of the chart. Clothespins are moved up or down depending on choices. Clips that are moved down may be moved back up if the teacher sees the student making improved choices. In addition, once a clip is moved up, it may be moved down. All clothespins are moved back to green at the end of the day. Agendas: Check each day for where your child landed on the clip chart. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.”- Dr. Seuss

STANDARD COURSE OF STUDY North Carolina's Standard Course of Study defines the appropriate content standards for each grade level to provide a uniform set of learning standards for every public school in North Carolina.  The Standard Course of Study was completely overhauled in the past few years, and the new standards were implemented for the first time in 2012-13. This initiative is part of a long-term trend to update and improve the standards as expectations change and as new research and information become available. Currently, North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study consists of the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics and the North Carolina Essential Standards in all other subjects, including social studies, the arts, healthful living, career and technical education, and world languages. (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/core-explained/)

Literacy: Readers Workshop Reading for Meaning 1. create mental images 2. use background knowledge/make connections 3. ask questions 5. determine the most important themes or ideas 6. synthesize information 7. Use “fix up” strategies Readers learn these skills as the teacher models these strategies, through guided practice, independent practice using “just right books”, and when working with peers. Strategies are modeled until the teacher gradually releases the responsibility to the reader. Good readers use reading strategies simultaneously to interpret texts. Example of Reader's Workshop

Writing: Writer’s Workshop Model Personal narratives (Small Moments) Sequenced and well elaborated Becoming Master writers by using Mentor Texts, expanding their writing Informational Introduce a topic Use facts to support topics Conclude Opinion pieces Form an opinion on a topic Use reasons to support (WHY!) Use linking words(because and also)

Words Their Way What is Words Their Way? Words Their Way is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program. Word study is implemented as a small component of the literacy plan but it is also interwoven in actual reading and writing texts. Students learn features by completing activities such as word sorting, word hunts, games and drawing and labeling. Students work individually, with partners, and in small groups to encourage cooperative learning and individual responsibility. New this year: Switching classes
