Univ logo UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase Slide 3 Plant Scheme and Controller Structure Source: Camacho et al, 1998 The model gets data from past input and past outputs and combines this data with future inputs The model then gives predicted output for the time step This predicted output is combined with reference trajectory to give future errors to the systems These future errors are then fed into optimizer, which enforces constraints on future predicted outputs and also minimizes the operating cost functions Solar system assisted by heat pump

Univ logo UKACC PhD Presentation Showcase Slide 5 Conclusions and Future Work  A model of a heating system consisting of a heat pump and a solar panel has been developed.  It is concluded that the system is working according to the expectations, reflecting the energy flows between the tanks as caused by opening valve and diverter.  A model predictive controller (MPC) is designed, which is able to make use of predicted future weather data and changing electricity prices and will be compared with other types of controllers i.e. PI and On-Off.  The MPC is slightly better than the conventional controllers but it can be more better by taking into consideration the nonlinearities  The MPC is slightly better than the conventional controllers but it can be more better by taking into consideration the nonlinearities and non-linear model of the plant.  In future optimum controller has to be design to compare with the above controllers.
