BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATIONLEVELS

Species  Species is the technical name given for a kind of organisms for example all people are considered to be one species distinct from other primates based on common appearence and more importantly that all races can and do interbreed with each other and producing fertile offspring.  Example: "lion," "walrus," and "Camphor tree" – each refers to a species.

Population  A population is all the organisms that both belong to the same species and live in the same geographical area.  Typically populations are subdivided into smaller groups: a pack of wolves, pride of lions, colony of ants.  Example:  A group of lions living in the African Savanna.  A group of bees in a honeycomb.

Community  A community is all the populations of different species living and interacting together in a distinct area. common location.  For example, a forest of trees and undergrowth plants, inhabited by animals and rooted in soil containing bacteria and fungi, constitutes a biological community.

Ecosystem  Ecosystems are distingushable groups of species and the abiotic(non-living) components of the environment with which the living creatures interact. Examples of ecosystems include ponds, forests, prairies.

ECOSYSTEM LEVEL Eucalyptus forest COMMUNITY LEVEL All organisms in eucalyptus forest SPECIES LEVEL Flying fox

Species A set of individuals closely resembling each other.

Population Same type of organism living together

Community Several populations living together Population interact

Ecosystem A biotic (living) community plus the abiotic (nonliving) features

Biome Similar ecosystems on earth together

Activity 1. A pod of bottlenose dolphins living in a specific region can be identifies as which level of organization? Why? a. Biosphere b. Ecosystem c. Population d. Community

2. Study The picture below. Which level of organization in the biosphere is BEST represented by the entire picture? a. Specie b. Ecosystem c. Population d. Community

3. Study the diagram below. Which is a level of organization that could be represented by the X? a. Plant b. Animal c. Biosphere d. Community

4. Which figure BEST represent the level of organization in an ocean?

5. Study the picture. Which level of biological organization results from the combination of the living organisms shown in the picture? a. Biosphere b. Ecosystem c. Population d. Community

6. Which sequence correctly identifyies the level of organization in a biosphere from most complex to least complex? a. Specie -population- community – ecosystem b. Ecosystem –community –population –specie c. Community –organism –ecosystem –population d. Population –ecosystem –organism - community
