WRITING PROMPT Why is India so colorful?

Continent? Asia Where is India?

GEOGRAPHY What kind of Map is this?

What does it show?

1)Location: On the Indian Subcontinent- large landmass that is separated from the rest of the continent 2) Place: 30* N, 80* E- Extremes of weather with floods, droughts, and a hot, dry desert-like climate 3) Movement: Like Egypt and Mesopotamia, Ancient India was a river civilization that relied on the Indus River for farming 4) Physical Regions: - Himalaya Mountains, Ganges River which empties into the Indus River, desert, and plains

Near? China Weather/climate? Dry deserts/monsoons Tropical or wet climate in some areas

Monsoons Monsoons are strong winds that blow one direction in the winter and another in the summer. When the rains begin many farmers celebrate. WHY??

Indus River Ganges River

-Farmers began planting around the Indus River in 6000 BC. This is 1,000 years before farming began in Egypt -Farmers grew wheat, barley, beans, and sesame, along with the first rice, bananas, and black peppers -Domesticated animals to plow fields and transport goods -Built irrigation canals to bring water from river to their crops -By 3000 BC towns formed along the river, 30 years later these would grow into mighty cities

Silt came from the melted snow coming down the the Mountain Range Mount Everest the world’s tallest Mountain at 29,028 feet. Himalayas

-Historians know little about the Indus River Valley Civilization because: 1)Few Indus River artifacts and remains have been found 2)Historians have not figured out their writing -Much more is known about Egypt and Mesopotamia, but historians have pieced together ideas about Indus River culture
