 Computer Fundamentals Computer Software

Review  Five Components of Computers  Example of input device  Example of output device  Define system unit  Example of storage device  Example of communications device

Learning Goals  Today I am: Defining the term “software” and distinguishing between system software and application software  So that I can: Understand how these pieces fit into the “bigger picture”  I’ll know I’ve got it if: I can explain what software is and its relevance to computer operations

What is software?  You write a definition!

What is software?  Software, also called a program, tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them

 Two types of Software System Software Operating system Utility program Application software

System Software vs. Application Software System Software  Direct control and access to computer hardware  Helps perform overall operations  Microsoft Windows  Mac OSX  Linux Application Software  Runs under system software  Made to do a specific task  Microsoft Word  iTunes  Adobe Photoshop  World of Warcraft

Computer Software  Installing is the process of setting up software to work with the computer, printer, and other hardware

What software would you use to:  Record temperatures and make a graph?  Type a report?  Make a presentation to the class?  Edit photos taken with a digital camera  Look up information on the Internet

Your Turn: Shopping for Software  Using the internet, you will shop for software for WBMS  First decide what kind of software the school needs  Then decide how many computers will need the software  Using software already installed on the laptops, detail the software, the manufacturer and the total cost for your purchase
