Harvest festivals around the world

Harvest festivals In Britain Christian people celebrate Harvest festival. In America people celebrate Thanksgiving. There are lots of different festivals around the world.

In west Africa there is a festival of Yams – to celebrate the Yam harvest. Yams are a bit like sweet potatoes.

In Germany they hold Oktoberfest – which celebrates the end of the grape harvest. Many of the grapes are made into wine.

In India there are many different harvest festivals, as different areas grow different foods. These include rice in the south, and wheat in the north. Animals are also decorated as part of the celebrations.

In Scotland they have Lammas - which celebrates the wheat harvest. A loaf of bread is made from the first harvest of wheat. It is then taken to church to be eaten.
