Who and what are we? Southend SCITT School Centred Initial Teacher Training SCITT programmes are designed and delivered by groups of neighbouring schools –we are based at Southend High School for Girls and the schools within our partnership are as follows:

School Centred Initial Teacher Training The programme is taught by experienced, practising teachers, and often tailored towards local teaching needs. All SCITT courses lead to qualified teacher status (QTS). Many, though not all, will also award you a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) validated by a higher education institution. Southend SCITT provide the opportunity of gaining a PGCE through its partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and Master Level credits. Our courses last for one year full-time. We offer School Direct Training - salaried and unsalaried (details to follow). SCITT courses follow the academic year, so to start your training in September you need to apply during the preceding academic year. (More about how to apply later.)

A UK undergraduate degree – a 2:2 or above. A GCSE grade C or above in English and Mathematics. (For primary a C in Science as well) To have passed the literacy and numeracy professional skills tests before starting teacher training. A strong knowledge and understanding of subject you wish to teach – at least 50% of your degree should be relevant (if degree does not link closely enough, a SKE course is also recommended). If you have non-UK qualifications you will need a Statement of Comparability from NARIC. Eligibility Criteria

For a place on the School Direct Training Programme that is salaried, you are also required to have at least three years’ work experience in addition to the eligibility requirements detailed above.

Non academic requirements Medical fitness – health questionnaire to be completed prior to starting the course. Applicants must fund this themselves. Declaration of criminal convictions (DBS – check) – agree to having an enhanced criminal record check prior to starting the course. Applicants must fund this themselves. We would also expect that you spend some time observing in a classroom before starting the course – minimum of 5 days.

School Direct offers 2 types of training places: 1.School Direct Training Programme For high quality graduates who want to be part of a school team from day one. You may be eligible for a bursary of up to £25,000 to support you while you train – dependent on subjects and degree classification. Tuition fees paid by student. Loans available from Student Loan Company. No salary received during training. Application through UCAS. Expectation of a job within the partnership at the end of the course. Training Programmes

2. School Direct Training Programme (salaried) An employment-based route for high-quality experienced graduates with at least three years’ work experience. You will earn a salary while you train. This salary will be in line with the unqualified teacher pay ranges if you are employed by a local authority maintained school, or at the advertised rate at an academy. This salary is funded in part by a government grant which also covers the costs of the tuition fees and which is paid directly to the SCITT. There are no bursaries available for this route. Application is through UCAS. Expectation of a job at end within partnership school.

Other routes Unfunded salaried placements: Places on the training programme are offered directly by a school to a trainee. School is responsible for paying the salary cost and tuition fees. No funding available for these trainees. Applications are directly to the school not through UCAS. No bursaries available. Expectation of a job at the end.

Take Note ‘expectation’ of a job at the end of the course is not a guarantee of a job!

SCITT - Core Application through UCAS. Tuition fees paid via a student loan or self- funded. Possible bursary according to degree classification and subject. What, you may ask, is the difference between this and the School Direct (non-salaried)? Nothing other than there is no expectation of a job at the end of the year.

Applying for a place Look into the different postgraduate routes into teaching. You might want to train in a university or college or you could be based mainly in a school. Visit schools and spend time in the classroom. You will be able to apply for up to 3 places.

Applications for Sept 2016 will have 2 Apply windows Key dates 27 th October 2015: Apply 1 begins – you can now start to apply online for courses starting Applicants can make up to 3 choices which will be considered by training providers in parallel. A decision on your application, which will include a face to face interview, will be made within 40 days. 9 th November 2016: Apply 2 starts – this is only available if applicants have been unsuccessful in Apply 1 or have declined all offers in Apply 2. Applicants can apply for as many places as they want in Apply 2 but only one at a time. Application Fees: The fee for is £23 – this covers both Apply 1 and 2. Application Process

QTS with PGCE On the PGCE you will be studying at Masters Level (Level 7) The programme (QTS with PGCE) is made up of 120 credits in total (Level 6&7) of which 60 could be obtained at Masters Level (one third of a complete Masters) The Masters credits can be gained from 3 modules/assignments (Professional, Enhanced and Curriculum) Curriculum Studies (2 modules, 1 at Level 6, 1 at Level 6/7) 40 credits Professional Studies (1 module at Level 6/7) 20 credits Enhanced Studies (1 module at Level 6/7) 20 credits Professional Placement / Professional Record of Development (40 credits at Level 6) credits are awarded when both periods of professional placement are complete

How do you achieve your M Level Credits? Three 4000 word assignments (Professional Studies, Enhanced Studies and Curriculum Studies) Marked at M Level (Level 7) – M Level criteria If an assignments reaches the criteria for M Level, you will be awarded 20 M level credits You could finish the PGCE with 60 M level credits in total
