Curriculum Literacy Math Science Social Science Social Emotional Learning

Literacy Much of our day is spent engaged in literacy activities. Reading Writing Listening Speaking

We utilize a workshop model for both reading and writing instruction that encourages scaffolding and a gradual release of responsibility as children move from modeled reading and writing to independence.

Literacy Instruction Reading Workshop Model –New literacy program called Schoolwide. Phonemic Awareness Lessons (ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds) Jolly Phonics Sight Words Guided Reading—matching books with individual reading levels Reading

Literacy Instruction Units of Study by Lucy Calkins –Think, Draw, Label, Write –Narrative, Information, and Opinion Writing Writing Our goal is to help children feel comfortable with writing and to build their confidence as they learn to match letters with sounds.

Math Curriculum Number and Numeration –Counting and reading/writing numbers Operations and Computation –Addition and subtraction Data and Chance –Collecting, organizing, displaying, and analyzing data Measurement and Reference Frames –Using nonstandard units of measure, identifying coin values, time measures (day, week, month), & temperature Geometry –Exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes Patterns, Functions, Algebra –Making/recognizing patterns, using a number line and a number grid

Math Instruction We use a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations. Key mathematical ideas are repeated over time in slightly different ways. Learning takes place through age- appropriate, playful activities. Math homework provides opportunities to “do math” at home!

Science Curriculum Collections in Nature Rainbows, Colors and Light Plants Our instruction in the area of science focuses on learning through inquiry and discovery.

Dolphin Do’s Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible

Me Bag Similar to “Show-and-Tell” Great opportunity for children to learn about each other Each child will be assigned a week during the year to bring in some photos and 4-5 items that help us get to know them. Items can be placed in the bag provided and brought to school on the Monday of your child’s assigned week. Parents are invited to come in to read a story on the Friday of their child’s week at 11:30 am/3:15pm.

Homework Reinforces the skills and concepts being taught in class and promotes responsibility. Weekly Homework Routines –Please check your child’s Take Home Folder and book bag on a daily basis. –Continue to read aloud to your child daily. It is one of the best ways to help your child develop the knowledge needed for later reading success. –Practice naming letters and sounds –Practice reading sight works quickly

Additional Information Please remember to have your child wear gym shoes on gym days and return their library book on book checkout days. Transportation changes—please let me know. Feel free to contact me at anytime with questions or concerns. There is no such thing as a silly question!

Snack We take a working snack break. Please keep snacks simple/finger food friendly. Please do not send juice or water. We have a water fountain in our classroom. No peanuts or tree nuts are allowed in our classroom. Healthy snack options – Carrot sticks Cheese stick Celery Go-Gurt (yogurt) Raisins Popcorn
