Lab Safety

Why is Lab Safety Important? So that you do not injure yourself or your classmates To preserve laboratory equipment

Basic Rules 1.Be responsible at all times. 2.Follow all directions. 3.Wear proper safety equipment. 4.Wait for directions from your teacher before beginning. Basic Rules

Be responsible No horseplay. It is dangerous to you and others.

Follow all Directions Touch equipment only after your teacher has told you to do so. Begin only after your teacher tells you to begin. Handle all equipment with care.

Wear Proper Safety Equipment Wear goggles to protect your eyes –when working with chemicals –when things might fly and hit your eyes

Wear Proper Safety Equipment Wear an apron or lab coat to protect your clothes when working with chemicals Gloves will protect your hands when using chemicals Safe Unsafe

Do not eat or drink in the lab. Never eat laboratory supplies. Never drink in the science lab.

Work Areas Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times.

During an experiment... Keep face, eyes, and mouth away from chemicals or lab equipment. Don’t put hands in your month or eyes during an experiment. Wash your hands with soap and water after completing all experiments.

Chemicals All chemicals in the laboratory are to be considered dangerous. Do not taste or smell any chemicals.

Handling Equipment Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Tell your teacher. Make sure your hands are dry before touching a plug.

Animals Always treat living things with respect. Make sure you wash your hands after handling an animal. Remember; all animals can bite, particularly if mistreated.

ACCIDENTS Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the teacher immediately, no matter how small it seems. Do not panic.

Waste Disposal Never pour anything down the drain unless you are told to do so. Hazardous chemicals down the drain can lead to pollution of ground water, lakes, and rivers.

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom.

What’s Wrong With This Picture? Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them.

Be Safe Follow directions. Wear safety gear. Wait for directions. Enjoy science.
