Fort Bragg High School Extra-Curricular Activities / Athletic Code Freshmen Advisory September 2012

Basic Eligibility What are the four categories of eligibility? Residential Academic Behavioral Attendance Who must adhere to eligibility requirements? All athletes, club officers, ASB members, and any other students representing Fort Bragg High School, must adhere to eligibility requirements if they are to represent FBHS in any school sponsored activity.

Campus Activities Do you need to be eligible to participate in a campus club? YES!! You must be academically eligible to fully participate in a club. You may attend lunch time meetings if you are not eligible, but you will not be allowed to participate in any club activity that occurs during class time (field trips, ASB meetings, etc.). What are the fall, winter, and spring sports? FallWinterSpring Cheerleading Cross Country Football Soccer Volleyball Basketball Cheerleading Wrestling Baseball Golf Softball Swimming Tennis Track

Academic Eligibility What is the minimum grade point average a student must maintain to be academically eligible? 2.0 If a student has two “F” grades and four “A” grades, is that student academically eligible? NO!!! Students with more than one “F” grade, regardless of GPA, are not eligible to participate in any extra-curricular or school sponsored activity. How many classes must a student take to be academically eligible? Six

Behavioral Eligibility What happens if a student athlete is suspended from school for being disrespectful to a teacher? The student athlete will not be allowed to participate in the sport, in any way, during the days of suspension. Upon the student’s return, the student may not travel with the team or compete with the team for five days after the suspension. This is called an activity suspension. What happens if a student is suspended from school for his/her fourth cell phone offense three days before a dance? The student will not be allowed to attend the dance even if the student is allowed to return to school before the dance. Students suspended from school receive a minimum five day activity suspension upon their return to school. This means the student is not eligible to participate in school sponsored activities for an additional five days.

Behavioral Eligibility (continued) What happens if a student athlete is suspended from school for being under the influence of marijuana? Besides a mandatory five day suspension and police report, the student will incur a 45 day activity suspension when he/she returns to school. Since all student athletes sign a drug free commitment pledge, the student will also be dismissed from the team. What happens if a student, not an athlete, is suspended from school for being in possession of alcohol? Besides a mandatory five day suspension and police report, the student will incur a 45 day activity suspension when he/she returns to school. This 45 day activity suspension excludes the student from participating in any school sponsored activity including dances and the graduation ceremony.

Behavioral Eligibility (continued) What happens if a student is suspended from school a second time for being disrespectful to a teacher? Because this is the second suspension for the same offense, the student will incur a 20 day activity suspension upon his/her return to school. An athlete will most likely be dismissed from the team. What happens if a student is suspended the last week of school? All out-of-school suspensions include an activity suspension upon the student’s return to school. If there are not enough school days to complete the activity suspension, the activity suspension will continue into the next school year until all the required days are fulfilled.

Attendance If an athlete is absent from school first period because she overslept, is she able to play in that day’s game? NO. Students must attend all classes in order to participate in practice or competition for the same day. If an athlete spends third period in the nurse’s office because he is feeling ill, can he play in that day’s game? NO. Students must attend all classes in order to participate in practice or competition for the same day. The nurse’s office is not class. If a student is in the drama club and the club has a performance this evening, what happens if the student decides to cut advisory? Students must attend ALL classes, including advisory, in order to participate, perform, or compete for the same day. This student would not be allowed to perform in the play on the day he/she cut class.

Questions? The Athletic Code of Conduct can be confusing at times. If you have questions, who can you ask? Mr. Triplett Mrs. Walker The office secretaries Your coach, counselor, or teacher

Congratulations!! How did you do? You have completed the last quiz!
