Simplify Warm Up

Section 8-1 A. CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIALS

Objective TSWBAT classify polynomials.

Vocabulary Monomial – a real number, variable, or a product of a real number and one or more variables with whole-number exponents. Degree of a monomial – the sum of the exponents of the variables. Polynomial – a monomial or sum of monomials. Degree of a polynomial – the degree of the monomial with the greatest exponent. Binomial – a polynomial with 2 terms. Trinomial – a polynomial with 3 terms. Standard Form: When a polynomial is in order from biggest to smallest by the degree of each term.

Example 1 What is the degree of each monomial? 1.8xy 2.-7y 4 z x 5. 4x 2 y

Example 2 Simplify

Example 3 Write each polynomial in standard form. What is the name of the polynomial based on its degree and number of terms?
