WALTER PAYTON COLLEGE PREP 34 1 WALTER PAYTON COLLEGE PREP 34 CHARACTER BUILDING & STREGNTH TRAINING

L.E.A.D “L” stands for LOVE. If you are a good leader you lead with love in your heart. “E” stands for EXAMPLE. If you are a good leader you lead by example. “A” stands for ACCOUNTABILITY. If you are a good leader you are accountable for yourself and others. “D” stands for DEVOTION. If you are a good leader your devoted to the people you lead and your cause.

WALTER PAYTON COLLEGE PREP FOOTBALL PROGRAM Our football program began in 2002. 2002-2009 we played in conference that was not playoff eligible 90% of our student athletes have never played contact football before Our entire football program over the last 4 years has averaged 33 players per year In the last 3 years that we have played in a playoff eligible conference we have qualified for the state playoffs the last two seasons

WALTER PAYTON FOOTBALL PROGRAM RESOURCES PROS OUR ADVERSITY We receive NO funding for football (Account Balance $0) Prior to 2012 we did not have a safe weight room facility We do not have a locker room. Prior to 2009 we did not play many night games, most games were in the morning Prior to 2009 we did not have adequate or up-to-date football equipment We walk 6 blocks to our practice field We lack athletes and size We lack tradition Our average ACT score is a 30 on our football team We have great support from our parents

HOW CAN WE CREATE THE ATMOSPHERE? HOW CAN WE GET THE SCHOOL, PARENTS, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE STUDENT-ATHLETES TO BUY IN TO OUR OUR SYSTEM? “ Some people see things the way they are and ask why. I see things that never were and ask why not” -Robert Kennedy

SETTING THE STAGE We fundraised by creating a team Ad Book and establishing the Walter Payton Classic We bought new helmets and shoulder pads for everyone on the team We created and bought new Uniforms We made wristbands with our team motto on them We created a team website and Facebook page We came up with a team poster with the team schedule on it We worked out in a personal training facility that was near the school We changed most of our games to night games and scheduled some suburban opponents We entered passing leagues and take a trip to Notre Dame for a passing league tournament each year We created a highlight tape for each team.

SETTING THE STAGE Invited Medal of Honor Recipients in to speak about their life experiences We evolved to a No Huddle Spread Football Team Our team trained to become fit (leaner and faster). We we were forced to adapt our scheme to our personnel Our practice script is sent out before practice to administration, parents, and our student-athletes Presented Mrs. Payton with Walter’s jersey. We changed the uniform so that “PAYTON” was displayed above the numbers Every member in the Walter Payton Football program has a pre-season interview In 2012 we invited alumni to participate in a 7 on 7 after the parent’s day scrimmage

MY PHILOSOPHY I want every student-athlete to gain a life experience when they come through our program. Participating in football at Walter Payton will be different than other sports programs. Our job as coaches is to put our student-athletes in a position to be successful. “If a man is called a street sweeper. He would sweep streets as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He would sweep streets so well that all hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” -Martin Luther king Jr.

Our jobs as coaches is to love our student-athletes TEAM PHILOSOPHIES Our jobs as coaches is to love our student-athletes Their job is to love each other HARD WORK EVERYONE CAN CONTRIBUTE We want our student-athletes to be selfless We will be the fittest team on the field

TEAM FITNESS We expect our student athletes to be fit Our student-athletes must be mobile. Core strength is the key component. Core strength will allow an athlete to run, lift, and play more efficiently. Many of our student-athletes will play on both sides of the ball and on special teams.

TEAM FITNESS Diet and nutrition our paramount and a vital part to an athlete’s fitness and performance Monitor student-athletes diet and activities (loseit.com) Student-athletes must always be properly hydrated

TEAM STRETCHING Dynamic and static stretching is a part of every workout Foam rollers are a vital tool that can help decrease the risk of injury. Prevents tightness in the muscles, muscle pulls, or strains Yoga is a practice that can help improve flexibility, range of motion, and decrease the risk of injury

FLEXIBILITY Today many kids are not as active as kids were in past generations. Child obesity is on the rise. Many kids lack flexibility in their hips and have trouble lowering their level. Concussions are becoming more common and can be very harmful to our student-athletes. Student- athletes that lack flexibility will have a difficult time getting into proper position to make a tackle or block. This will increase the risk of a concussion

OFF-SEASON WORKOUTS We have our workouts in the mornings at 645AM We workout 3 to 4 times a week starting in January Each workout is roughly 45 minutes in length

Anthony Faltin tfaltin34@gmail.com 312-718-7373 L.E.A.D. “If you ask me how I want to be remembered, it is as a winner. You know what a winner is? A winner is somebody who has given his best effort, who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has utilized every ounce of energy and strength within them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean that they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've given it their best. That's a winner.” -Walter Payton #34
