 Warm Up: While you watch this video write down what you see happening in Egyptvideo  Content Objective: I will analyze how cooperation and conflict influence the division and control of Earth by interpreting pictures of the Egyptian protests

 Suez Canal

 Egypt is home to the Suez Canal  About 8% of the world’s sea trade travels through the canal  Much Middle Eastern oil travels through the canal

 Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1977  The treaty ended nearly 30 years of war between the countries  One of the only Middle Eastern countries to recognize Israel’s legitimacy

 Egypt is a key United States ally in the region  Egypt receives about $2 billion a year from the US as part of the Israeli peace treaty

 Egyptians fed up with 30 year rule of Hosni Mubarak and want him to leave  Mubarak thought of as dictator  Mubarak government accused of torture and murder  High food prices and unemployment
