UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MERCED WRITING PROJECT

Summer Invitational Institute 2006 UCM Founding Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey Welcoming the Fellows

We Started Each Morning by Journaling for 20 min. Good writing teachers always write themselves. The Daily Journal is a non-threatening place to experiment with ideas and language.

Daily Journaling Journaling allows for a variety of ways to think and process information. “Let me see what I think.”

Writing the Daily Log... The Daily Log is a record of each day’s events. Writing a Daily Log gives opportunities to be creative with report writing.

Reading the Daily Log The Logs take on the genres of letters, stories, poems, songs, news articles, plays, myths, and so on. Each day is reported creatively by the Daily Log

Clever Daily Logs Bring Fun and Laughter to Writing

Best Practice Demonstrations Teaching demonstrations are the core of our Leadership Training Institute for Fellows. Each demonstration begins with a formal introduction of the presenters by their interview partners (Yet another way of writing).

Teaching Demonstrations Showing and discussing student work is an integral component of the demonstrations. “This is what my students did.”

Fellows Actively Participate In All The Presentations... “…I flipped over the handle bars, sailing through the air like an acrobat….” “My feet went flying off the pedals and then….”

Group Writing... Teaching demonstrations encourage participants to work together and share their knowledge.

Presenters Address The Spectrum of K-14 Teaching Teaching writing from kindergarten through college is the same process. ---George Hillocks University of Chicago
