understand the importance Visual Arts participation has on academic performance

All Students participating in arts-related classes: * Stay in school * Have higher graduation rates * Less likely to drop out of school * Perform higher in academic areas such as mathematics, reading and writing * Achieve higher scores on standardized tests such as the SAT and the FCAT

* Information was based on 188, th Grade Students * For the general population, the more arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in all measures. * For students on “free and reduced lunch” an indicator of socioeconomic levels, the more arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in all measures. * For students divided by ethnicity, the more arts classes taken, the higher the student achievement in all measures * The more arts classes taken, the less likely a student is to dropout of the cohort group.

* Information Based on 197, th Grade students * Overall increase in the number of 12 th grade students taking arts- related classes * Marked increase in the number of students qualifying for free- reduced lunch in arts-related classes * Overall increase in the number of students graduating with a standard high school diploma who took an arts-related class

understand the relationship between the Critical Analysis process in the Visual Arts and Common Core Literacy Standards in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening

* Demonstrate independence * Build Strong content knowledge * Respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline * Comprehend as well as critique * Value evidence * Use technology and digital media strategically and capably. * Come to understand other perspectives and cultures

* Meaningful appreciation and study of works of art begins with close observation. * The Core Standards in Literacy similarly describe reading as the product of sustained observation and attention to detail. * The arts reward sustained inquiry and provide a perfect opportunity for students to practice the discipline of close observation.

* In both the arts and reading, such attention to the specifics can be hard, particularly when the work is complex. * The process of analyzing artworks is a slow, gradual one that requires practice. * Appreciation requires tolerating any initial confusion or uncertainty and staying with it until more is seen

* Describe-find the facts * Analysis-determine the relationships among the facts * Interpretation-explain the meaning * Evaluation/Judgment-determine the quality or lasting importance of the work

* Work collaboratively in assigned group * Select a Scholastic Art Magazine Issue-Text * Connect to Museum Theme from Newspapers in Education (NIE)-Text * Find 2-4 works in the Museum that reflect the connection * Create a 1-2 minute presentation (Power Point or Movie) that supports your connection.
