F.O.A. (Bellwork)  What do these statements have in common?  All dogs are vicious.  Everyone who likes golf is boring.  All politicians are dishonest.  Blondes are dumb.

F.O.A. (Bellwork)  What do these statements have in common?  All white Americans are obese, lazy, and dim-witted. Homer Simpson of the TV series The Simpsons is the personification of this stereotype.  Mexican stereotypes suggest that all Mexicans are lazy and came into America illegally.  All Arabs and Muslims are terrorists.  All people who live in England have bad teeth.  All Jews are greedy.  All Asians are good at math. All Asians like to eat rice and drive slow.

Bias  A strong opinion or feeling formed beforehand based on how you were raised or sometimes without thought or reason.  Example: Everyone knows that blonde hair is the best!

Example:  When the symphony used to pick musicians it mainly chose males over females. Now to make sure it is not biased, it doesn’t look at the performers. It only listens to the music. The ratio of males to females is more balanced now due to this change.

Example of bias I have to buy ice cream for the party. My favorite type of ice cream is chocolate. Even though it’s my mom’s birthday and I know she likes strawberry ice cream, I think I will buy chocolate anyway. How is this an example of bias?

Stereotype  When people are categorized based on some feature that they have. Most commonly, race, gender, or religion.  Perhaps in this day and time, one of the biggest stereotype examples is the perception of Muslims.
