Our Global Village If there were only 100 people in the entire world…

Our village has neighborhoods One neighborhood has 61 Asians Another has 13 Africans 12 Europeans are in towns 8 Hispanics live in a barrio 5 Americans in the suburbs

We speak many languages 22 villagers speak Chinese 9 speak English 9 converse in Hindi 7 talk in Spanish 4 each speak Bengali & Arabic 3 chat in Russian or Portuguese 2 each speak in Japanese, French & German

Our village worships many Gods 32 villagers are Christians 20 are Muslims 15 are atheists or not religious 13 are Hindu 11 practice a folk religion 6 are Buddhists 1 is a Jew

Our village is divided equally between women and men

Men in our village live 61 years; Women live 3 years longer

30 of us are children under the age of 15

25 villagers are women of childbearing age

63 of us have jobs; 37 do not

1 villager has a college education 17 of us cannot read or write

33 people in our village live in poverty housing

18 villagers do not have safe, clean water in their homes

40 villagers do not have a sanitary toilet

10 rich people earn 54% of the village’s total income

20 of our mothers, daughters and sisters have been raped

Our village spends 10 times more on weapons than on well-being

20 villagers survive on $1.00/day 51 get by on $2.00/day

One Year in Our Village 3,000 people died at the World Trade Center in New York (2001) 300,000 people died from a tsunami in the Indian Ocean (2004) 11 million children died from starvation (every year)
