Equality and Discrimination Presented by James Hallett

Stereotypes ▪What is a Stereotype? ▪A stereotype is when lots of people believe something to be true about a person or group of people. ▪People use stereotypes all the time. ▪Let us look at what some of the most common stereotypes.

What stereotypes do people use for Blondes?? What stereotypes do people use for Americans?? Stereotypes Stupid, Brainless, Air heads Fat, loud, Over the top

Stereotypes What stereotypes do people use for Muslims?? What stereotypes are there for people on Benefits?? Terrorists Lazy, Scroungers

Stereotypes What stereotypes do people use for Politicians?? What stereotypes are there for gay men?? Liars, Only out for themselves Girly, Camp

Do we think these Stereotypes are all True? If we believe these stereotypes we are being prejudice. Prejudice is when you judge someone based on what you think you know about them……. like the examples of stereotypes we just talked about.

▪That’s why it is so important to treat people as individuals ▪Get to know them before you make up your mind about what they are like and what they can do. ▪This is called equality. It is about giving everyone a fair chance and treating people as equals. Equality

Discrimination happens when you don’t get to know people properly. You treat them differently than you would anyone else just because of one thing about them. This is against the law!! The law says that everyone should have the same chances to do things as everyone else. Discrimination
