Old Testament & New Testament

Women of the Bible The Bible is full of women who became unexpected heroines and surprising instruments of God’s story. These women are like us all: a mixture of strength and weakness, sin and goodness. Their circumstances, struggles, hopes, and dreams have much to teach about living a life of faith with God.

Sarah & Hagar Sarah was the barren wife of Abraham. While traveling through Egypt, Abraham passed her off as his sister in exchange for his safety—twice! If Abraham was quick to give her up, God was not; God protected her and restored her back to her husband.

Martha & Mary Biblical References Luke 10:38–42; John 11:1–3, 17–45 Location and Dates Bethany, AD 26–30 Key Verses “‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better.’”— Luke 10:41–42 “‘Yes, Lord,’ [Martha] told him, ‘I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.’”—John 11:27 Back to Menu

Martha & Mary Jesus found friendship in people like Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus. The Gospels tell of several interactions between Jesus and Martha and Mary. In one story, Jesus is at their home, and Martha is busy with preparations to be hospitable to Jesus.
