Galatians 5:16 Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism Ron Merrymanpg 96 “Many Christians reverse the concept by saying or thinking: ‘If we suppress the flesh; if we try not to do fleshly works, then we will be spiritual.’ This attitude leads in turn to legalistic strictures in an effort to ‘hold down’ the flesh. THESE TOTALLY MISS THE POINT OF Gal. 5:16, which guarantees those fleshly lusts will not reach their goal or end only when the believer conducts his/her life in the Spirit!”

Galatians 5:17 Claiming Faith, Finding Freedom: the Study of Galatians (vol. 2) David Jeremiahpp “A natural man is spiritually dead and can do nothing to please God. He needs to be born again—born from above. When a man is born again, many things happen to him all at once: he receives a new nature, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in his life, he passes from death to life, and he receives the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. “But here is the bad news—his old nature does not go away. It is not eradicated and cut out completely from his core. So now he has two natures: the old nature and the new nature, the old man and the new man. “The flesh is the old, unregenerate nature. It is everything a man is before he accepts Christ. But the new nature is everything he is becoming because of his salvation. It should not come as a surprise to us that the old nature and the new nature are at war with each other. When we allow the old nature to dominate our lives, we are carnal men and women. But when the Holy Spirit is in control, we are spiritual men and women.”

Galatians 5:17 Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism Ron Merrymanpg 98 “Believers may not simply do something because they will it as though there was no conflict going on within them between flesh and Spirit. At issue in the believer’s ‘doings’ is whether he is expressing the mind of the flesh or the mind of the Spirit. Stated another way: opposition between the flesh and Spirit, each pulling a different direction, seeks to express itself in the choices and options of the believer; he dares not act as though his will were not influenced by the warring agents within him.”

Galatians 5:18 Galatians: A Call to Christian Liberty Howard Vospg 102 “‘If you are led by the Spirit,’ if you are under the control of the Spirit, then of course the Spirit will be contending successfully against the flesh and its manifestations. You are therefore not under the condemnations of the law because the righteous demands of the law are being fulfilled in daily living by the ministry of the Spirit [Rom 8:4]. Moreover, the Spirit is the seal of our being in Christ (Eph 1:13), and therefore we are no longer under condemnation of the law. We do not need an external curb to keep us in line or to produce righteousness, because the internal impetus (the Spirit) to righteousness is abundant. Furthermore, the law is made for the fleshly man, not for the righteous man (1 Ti 1:9).”

Galatians 5:18 Galatians: God’s Antidote to Legalism Ron Merrymanpg 99 “This verse seems out of place, but Paul is actually pulling us back into one of his themes: the relationship of the believer to Old Testament Law. ‘Flesh’ and ‘law’ are co-relative terms in this context: to be free from one is to be free from the other. Flesh is unaided human nature animated by evil principle: Law is the standard under which unaided human nature strives in vain. In salvation, man is freed from the cursing demands of the law because Christ bore totally the penalty thereof; moreover, the dominion of the sin nature is broken and man is brought through the Holy Spirit into new life that is animated by the very essence of Jesus Christ. The effect is such that the entire tenor of his actions and thought processes are then brought into the sphere of Holy Spirit influence and productivity. He is led or has the capacity of being led by the Spirit and as such needs not to be led by the law or to be under the law.”
