Focus Skill: Compare & Contrast

When you compare two things, then you tell how they are alike. * Both are animals. * Both have four legs. * Both have tails. * Both have ears.

When you contrast two things, then you tell how they are different. * Cats purr and dogs bark. * Cats have long whiskers and dogs do not.

Let’s Compare & Contrast!

Compare means.... * Both characters teach students. have rosy cheeks. * Both characters live in the same house.

Contrast means.... * Miss Nelson wears bright colors. Miss Viola Swamp wears a black dress. * Miss Nelson is sweet. Miss Viola Swamp is strict. * Miss Nelson has light hair. Miss Viola Swamp has dark hair.

* How are a real cow and the cow in Serious Farm alike? * They both live on a farm. * They both give milk.

* How are a real cow and the cow in Serious Farm different? * Edna, the cow in “Serious Farm”, can talk.* Real cows cannot talk. * Edna stands on a fence and tries to sound like a rooster.* A real cow couldn’t do this.

The Trail Ride Nadia is going on a trail ride The Trail Ride Nadia is going on a trail ride. She will ride fifty miles on horseback. The weather will be cold, and it might rain. Nadia has two horses, Sugar and Ringer. Nadia is sure that both horses are in good shape. However, she wants to choose the better one for the trail ride. Sugar is a tall white horse. She is always eager to obey Nadia’s commands, but she likes to run fast. Sometimes it is hard for Nadia to make Sugar walk slowly. Sugar doesn’t like to walk in mud. Ringer is a tall brown horse. He is sturdy, patient, and sometimes stubborn. He is more comfortable to ride than Sugar. He can walk all day without getting tired, and he likes to run. He does not like to be around other horses.

How are Sugar and Ringer alike? A. They are both white. B. They like other horses. C. They are both stubborn. D. They are both in good shape. They are both in good shape.
