Sept. 6, 2012 AGENDA: 1 – Bell Ringer & Turn in Homework 2 – Cornell Notes: Intro to Chemistry 3 – Periodic Table Game Today’s Goal: Students will be able to describe the study of chemistry, describe the 4 phases of matter, and effectively use their periodic tables. Homework 1.Bring signed parent letter if you haven’t already. 2.Class Materials – Due Monday

Bell Ringer (5 min) Write down: 1.What you want to accomplish next week at work or your extracurricular activities. Ex. I want to shoot 500 baskets and make 80% of them. 2.What you want to accomplish next week at school Ex. I want to get at least a 9/10 on my quiz. 3. What you want to accomplish next week for yourself Ex. I want to run 30 min every day.

Cornell Notes: Please take out your notebook and properly set up your paper. Topic: Introduction to Chemistry Date: 9/6/2012

What is Chemistry? (5 min) Chemistry is the study of matter and how it reacts. Matter is composed of atoms.

What are the four states of matter? (5 min)

What is an element? (2 min) A substance made up of one type of atom.

What is the periodic table? (5 min) A systematic (ordered) collection of elements. What is each box?

How to read the periodic table? (5 min)

Competition (10 min) What is this element’s atomic mass? What state of matter is it?

What is lead’s atomic number & chemical symbol?

What elements have the following symbols: Li, Ca, H, He?

What is this element’s atomic mass and number?

What are the chemical symbols for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine?

Rank the following elements by decreasing atomic mass: H, Mg, Na, P, Br

What is the chemical symbol for the only radioactive element with an atomic mass less than 207?

Chemical Composition of the Human Body by mass? What is the symbol for the most common element in the body?

Chemical Composition of the Human Body by mass? What is the symbol for the most common element in the body?

Chemical Composition of the Human Body by mass? Which of these elements are in the same column of the periodic table?

Synthesis Questions (5 min) 1.How is the periodic table arranged? 2.What is the correlation between atomic number and atomic mass? 3.What is the only element that is a liquid at room temperature?
