AUSD Mathematics Summit Presentation to the Board of Education November 25, 2008

Math Summit Purpose and Outcomes Purpose: To understand where we are and begin to determine where we are going Outcome: To determine next steps to increase student achievement in mathematics

Who participated? 15 grade Four – Algebra teachers 5 math coaches, ACOE support, AEA 6 site administrators 4 district administrators

State policy on Algebra Update Algebra legislation: All 8 th graders in Algebra (now being challenged) CDE Algebra Summit CDE Algebra Success Initiative Guiding Document: Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools

AUSD Mathematics Status District Lens Curriculum Development Professional Development Student Achievement Data Circles

District analysis of math student achievement data STAR: District overall math Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) is high with 63% proficient or advanced Math AYP stayed flat AUSD missed the math Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) for some groups: African American, Students with disabilities

District analysis of math student achievement data Next years AMO target is 45.5% proficiency; our African American, American Indian, Latino, Pacific Islanders, & Students with disabilities will need to make big gains Math CSTs declined in % proficient, grades 6-11 Math CSTs reiterate achievement gap between our lowest and highest performing groups
