Abstract AUBIExpress: Desktop Delivery at Auburn University Pambanisha King and Juliet Rumble Ralph Brown Draughon Library, Auburn University, Auburn, AL Implementation One full-time staff member and 2 FTE student workers currently manage AUBIExpress. Student workers are responsible for the majority of the scanning process. The student scanners work at two Dell workstations equipped with Epson GT scanners, Microsoft Windows and Adobe Professional. Each request is delivered as a black and white image with a grayscale watermarked copyright statement. The service is experiencing an increase in usage after two years of declining request volume. A scanner malfunction in August of 2004 caused an extensive backlog that led to a decreased number of requests. The library’s Web Advisory Group suggested web page navigation improvements that have increased usage. The Subject Liaison's within the Reference Department have been instrumental in informing faculty of service enhancements. As the electronic availability of library materials rises, many libraries search for ways to provide electronic access to their print collections. AUBIExpress provides electronic Adobe Acrobat (PDF) copies of articles and book chapters from resources located at the three Auburn University Library branches. The service is available, free of charge, to Auburn University faculty, staff, graduate students, persons with disabilities, and AU distance education students. There is a maximum request limit of five items per person per day and an item size limit of 50 pages. Requests, submitted through an online form, are usually processed within 2-4 business days. This service provides users with access to portions of the print collection and supplements database access for older journal holdings. Conclusions AUBIExpress continues to serve as an important research tool for faculty and graduate students. The value of the service increases as turnaround time is decreased. The department uses LIbQual data, user groups, and link analysis to analyze and improve service. The addition of more advanced scanners and attention to peak period staffing has reduced the average turnaround to a day or less. Auburn’s Interlibrary Loan Department will begin using ILLiad this fall and ILLIad’s web delivery tools will allow the AUBIExpress unit to deliver higher resolution scans and large color image files on a web server. Epson GT scanner and student workstation Auburn University is a land-grant institution with a total enrollment of 23,333 students in 13 colleges. AUBIExpress serves 1,177 full-time faculty members, and 3,169 graduate students in 13 colleges. During a reorganization project in 2000, Auburn’s main library moved from four subject reference desks to one centralized reference desk. As the collection was reorganized, the library’s space constraints became more evident. AUBIExpress was started during the Spring semester of 2000, when the library moved all pre-1970 journal holdings and many government documents to the Closed Stacks area in the library’s basement.
