What was the Renaissance? A time of political, social, economic and cultural change Reawakened interest in classical Greek and Roman learning Shift from religion and spirituality towards current human experiences Humanism- used past Greek and Roman culture to understand their current world
Why Italy? 1.Italy was the center of the Roman Empire - it’s location made it central to European and African trade; brought new ideas 2. Architectural remains to study - Coins, buildings, statues… 3. Roman Catholic Church - supporter of the arts
City-states – Ran by rich & powerful families, dominated by wealthy merchants Renaissance Art – Reflected humanism – Used perspective to create 3D art – Dominated by the arch, column, and domes
