2 Exams Summary You will sit 2 papers that will assess your reading and your writing skills. Paper 1 Reading – Studying Written Language 1hr exam Read and answer questions based on non fiction texts Worth 40marks (20% GCSE Grade) Paper 2 Writing – Using Written Language 1hr exam (straight after paper 1) Writing information and ideas in various forms such as: newspaper article, leaflet, report, letter etc. Worth 40marks (20% GCSE grade) Outcomes: To know and practice the skills needed for the exams.

You will sit BOTH of these exams on the 10th of January Only 64 days to go!

4 Paper 1 - Reading In this exam you will have to read 2 examples of non fiction texts – this means it will not be a story. These could be examples of web pages, news articles, leaflets or advertisements. You cannot predict what will come up from one year to the next, but the skills needed to answer the questions can be practised. Outcomes: To know and practice the skills needed for the exams.

Appreciating style (analysing the way a writer writes) Comparing Texts (identifying and explaining the similarities and differences between texts.) 6 Paper 2 - Writing In this exam you will have to produce two different non fiction texts. You could be asked to produce reports, speeches, leaflets, letters etc. You cannot predict what will come up from one year to the next, but the skills and features required within each non fiction text type can be practiced. Outcomes: To know and practice the skills needed for the exams.

7 Main Skills Needed Text type and purpose - establish the style and the structure of the text that you are required to produce (inform, persuade, explain, advise, entertain, instruct) Use effective language devices and features - incorporate the desired language techniques (rhetorical questions, facts, exaggeration) Use appropriate presentational devices - what should the text look like? (headings, captions, bullet points) Audience – who are you writing for? Outcomes: To know and practice the skills needed for the exams.
