Colonial Intermediate Unit In-Service East Stroudsburg University October 14, 2013

Objectives Participants will be able to: o describe and apply the practices of Quality Physical Education. o understand the positive connection between exercise and academic achievement. o learn a progression of moderate-to-vigorous physical activities that can immediately be used in their Physical Education classes. o consider ways to adapt these activities in a way that best works for them and their students.

BDNF Brain-derived Neurotropic Factor “A protein produced inside nerve cells when they are active. It serves as Miracle- Gro for the brain, fertilizing brain cells to keep them functioning and growing, as well as spurring the growth of new neurons.” ~John Ratey, “SPARK”

Move It, Move It! warm-up minimal setup leadership opportunities

BDNF  BDNF is produced through physical activity  A lack of it is why we lose focus and get squirmy in our seats after awhile  It’s presence enhances the learning process  There is a theory that students with ADHD need to replenish their BDNF more often.

Quality Physical Education  Maximum participation – enough equipment so each student has his/her own  50% or more should be moderate-to-vigorous physical activity  Based on state-standards  Has an assessment piece  (Make connections to classroom learning)

Word Wall

Switcheroo Objective: To move from 1 parachute to another when your color is called. Concepts: ~ clockwise ~ counterclockwise

Critter in the Web Objective: How many times can your group toss and catch a critter using your parachute. You are the spider, the chute is your web and the critter is lunch! mmm lunch!

Critter Grab Objective: Work with your group to toss the critter in the air and take turns catching it with your hands.

Critter Soup Objective: How many critters can your group accumulate by working together to toss the critter in the air and take turns catching it with your hands.

Stealing Critters for Soup Objective: To see which group can accumulate the most critters by: o “stealing” critters from other groups o working together to toss the chicken in the air o taking turns catching it with your hands.

Soup Line Objective: How many critters can the entire group accumulate by using parachutes to toss and catch the critters from chute-to-chute?

Chicken Coops Objective: Using 6 hoops, each group cooperatively constructs a chicken coop. Upon completion, each group member must crawl through the coop without knocking it down. If it collapses, the group starts again. Extension: How many ways can you move through the coop?

Angry Birds  volleyball net represents the sling shot  bowling pins or cones represent the pigs  chicken coops made from hula hoops represent the shelter around the pigs  yarn balls represent the objects launched by the sling shot

The Tricky Triangle All participants must work together so that all participants end up on their correct polyspots.

The Silly Pirate Song Once there was a pirate, Who sang the Pirate Song…. Aarrrrr!
