California Integrated Waste Management Board 2 AB2449-Overview Only about 5% of plastic bags are recycled. Disposed bags create problems for waterways and marine life. At-store recycling programs provide consumers with over 7000 convenient locations for recycling.

California Integrated Waste Management Board 3 AB2449-Goals Encourage/Increase use of reusable bags. Provide collection and recycling at stores for plastic carryout bags and report on efforts.

California Integrated Waste Management Board 4 AB2449-Who Must Establish A Program Store operators must establish a recycling program –Supermarkets ($2,000,000) –10,000 square feet with pharmacy Other retail establishments (Optional) –Do not have to make available reusable bags

California Integrated Waste Management Board 5 AB2449-Store Responsibilities Provide specific wording on plastic carryout bags. Make accessible collection bins available to customers in the store. Ensure that recycling does not conflict with jurisdiction programs. Maintain records. Make reusable bags available to customers.
