Unit of energy use over time used to bill electric customers

What is a kilowatt hour (kWv)?

Electric current that reverses direction at regular intervals

What is an alternating current (AC)?

The amount of power required by consumers

What is the load?

Measure of electric energy that electrons can release or acquire when they move between conductors

What is voltage?

Degree to which an electrical component resists the flow of current.

What is resistance?

Land set aside for distribution towers, poles, lines and other facilities.

What is right of way?

Provides a path for unintended power to travel down a pole and into the earth

What is a ground wire?

Nonconductive materials used to support the power line at its attachment points and reduce sway

What are insulators?

A piece of equipment designed to protect components in an electric distribution system in the event of a system failure. (Can be re-set.)

What is a distribution circuit breaker?

Adjusts voltage levels in distribution circuits to maintain a constant voltage level in the system.

What is a distribution circuit regulator?

Located along both the transmission and distribution system routes and contains transformers to step down power and re-route it.

What are substations?

A structure within the substation yard that houses electric power distribution monitoring and control equipment.

What is the control house?

A piece of equipment in which the primary winding has more turns than the secondary winding. Used to change voltages.

What is a step down transformer?

Connects the electrical power output of a distribution substation with the input terminal of a primary circuit.

What is a distribution feeder circuit?

Structure found at distribution substations that contains switches to route power out of the substation

What is a distribution bus?

Interconnected lines that move electric power to its end user—the customer

What is the electric power distribution system?

Power lines are called this-- probably because electricity flows along the path of least resistance.

What are conductors?

Consists of a system of distribution line that are connected to only a single power source

What are radial distribution networks?

Circuit carrying power from a substation to a local distribution service area

What is a primary circuit?

Can be found in either a web or a loop configuration

What is an interconnected distribution network?

Device that measures the amount of power consumed

What is an electric meter?

Conversion of high voltage electricity to lower voltages by transformers

What is stepped down?

Wires connecting a distribution transformer to a customer’s house

What is a service drop?

Using devices that can read electric meter data

What is automatic meter reading (AMR)?

Wireless automatic transmission of data, usually for remote monitoring

What is telemetry?
