Olweus Class Meeting November 18, 2014 Respect: What does it mean to YOU? Respect (n.) – the condition of being honored; esteemed or well regarded

What does respect mean to you?  Respect can have different meanings for each of us. To begin today’s class meeting, let’s find out what respect means to you.  Each of you will take a short quiz entitled “How Respectful Are You?”  Your homeroom teacher(s) will pass out copies of the quiz.  Please work independently, and answer each question honestly.  Ready, set, go! You may begin the quiz…..

Time to go over quiz results…..  How did you do? Are you a respectful person? Let’s go over each question to find out.  1.) You meet someone who is different from you. What do you do?  The best answer choice is c. -  Try to understand where he/she is coming from and try to be his/her friend  2.) You are borrowing a shirt from a friend. What would a RESPECTFUL thing be to do?  The best answer choice is c. –  Treat it better than you would treat your own shirt  3.) You accidentally hurt someone’s feelings. What do you do?  The best answer choice is c. –  Apologize and try to learn how not to offend him/her again

What is the RESPECTFUL thing to do?  The best answer choice is c. –  Wait until there is a break to talk to your friend  5.) To get something you want, what do you do?  The best answer choice is c. –  Ask politely  6.) You are running late to meet a friend. What is the RESPECTFUL thing to do?  The best answer choice is c. –  Call your friend and say “sorry” and tell him/her what time you will be there  Add up your score at see if you are a respectful person or if you have some work to do in the area of respect.

How Respect Ties in with the Dukes’ Pledge  Respect is an important part of our MMS Dukes’ Pledge:  In all areas of our school, Dukes are:  Respectful:  I use polite language  I accept others differences  I demonstrate patience towards my peers & staff  Showing respect toward YOURSELF, your friends, other students, your parents/guardians, and your teachers is so important. It is one of the pillars taught in elementary and middle school. If we all follow the “Golden Rule” and treat others the same way we want to be treated, then it’s all good!

Activity – Create an Acrostic Poem using R.E.S.P.E.C.T  An acrostic poem is one that uses a word or phrase (usually the theme or the underlying subject matter of the poem) written vertically. Each letter of the word/phrase then acts as the beginning letter for a new line of the poem. Whatever is written using each letter must connect to the subject matter.  In small groups, we challenge you to create an acrostic poem using the letters in the word “respect”. Brainstorm what respect means to you and the other members of your group. Limit group size to no more than 4 students per group.  Your homeroom teacher will pass out a paper to each group with only the letters “respect” written on it. The rest is up to you and your group.  Please share your acrostic poems if time allows.  Homeroom teachers, feel free to display student acrostic poems on the door or in the classroom.
