Maintaining Stormwater BMPs: RWMWD 2013 BMP Maintenance Pilot Program Paige Ahlborg Stormwater U April 1, 2014

RWMWD Permit Program Volume reduction required on projects disturbing one acre or more of land Some install additional rain gardens based on resident interest

Type and Number of BMPs in RWMWD

BMP Grading System A- Continue Routine Maintenance B- Minimal Maintenance Needed C- Additional Maintenance Needed ________________________ D&F- Not functioning as designed. Major fix required.

Determine average cost of maintenance/BMP Comparing various age and maintenance regimes Determine feasibility of expanded implementation BMP Maintenance Pilot Program: Project Goals

Maplewood Living Streets Little Canada 59 BMPs 1-7 years old Living Streets 31 BMPs < 1 year old

Who will do the work? RWMWD Interns Outside Maintenance Contractor Control over work performed Extra time and cost Number of hours required for full time crew Less experience Hire a crew supervisor at added cost Existing companies already performing this work Would have experienced crews Would have to fit in their schedule but also not worry about filling time

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE (BMP Grades A-C) Remove litter, weeds, accumulated sediment, and other debris Fill and protect any eroded areas Add new mulch when needed Supplemental planting as directed

Spring Clean-Up Tasks

Routine Site Visits
