St Urban’s Catholic Primary School Parent Information Evening

Year A warm welcome to you all and thank you for attending our information meeting today Staffing…………. Class Governor…….. Living, learning and growing together in God’s love.

Our expectations of the children To attend school everyday To have respect for themselves and all human- beings To respect the environment and society in which they live To show the best manners possible at all times To try their best in all they do

What you can expect from us… To help pupils know of God’s love for them and to learn about the message of Christ through the Gospels treat our children, families and staff with dignity and respect To provide a high quality, inclusive education for all where creativity and personality are allowed to blossom and thrive To help all individuals to develop confidence in themselves and have high self-esteem To ensure the academic, physical, emotional and spiritual development of all our pupils so that that they can leave St. Urban’s as fully rounded human beings who view themselves as valued members of society

Child Protection and Safeguarding Designated Staff for Child protection are Miss Ferguson and Miss McStay We have strict procedures in place that help us deal with matters that are a cause for concern The designated staff have a duty to report matters/concerns of a potentially serious nature

Health and Safety Last academic year, we commissioned a Local Authority H&S audit. All H&S management procedures were deemed at least good and the premises safety was judged outstanding Members of the School Council (children) conduct a walk- round inspection with Miss McStay on a termly basis Fire Drills are conducted on a termly basis with a review of evacuation procedures; Mrs Rigg tests the Fire Alarms weekly and Miss McStay conducts a Fire Safety walk-round inspection once a week A Fire Risk Assessment is carried out every year and verified by the Local Authority Fire Safety Team

Attendance and Punctuality School begins at 8.50am every morning - please ensure that your child/ren are here on time every morning The school day ends at 3.00pm – please ensure your child is collected form school on time If you make alternative arrangements for the collection of your child from school, please contact the office to inform us of this

Application for exceptional absence in term time Request to take your child/ren on holiday in term time can no longer be granted or authorised If there really are exceptional circumstances, then you can make a request to take your child/ren out of school; whilst these will be considered by the Headteacher and Governors, they may not be authorised

St Urban’s – a Catholic School Community What sets us aside primarily from all other schools (non-faith schools) is that we worship and pray together as a community within school and with the wider Parish We invite parents and families to our Acts of Worship in school and hope that when you can, you will join us for these occasions We invite everyone to our School/Parish Masses and very much expect that as members of our school community, parents and families can commit to this having chosen our school for their child/ren

Curriculum The new National Curriculum is in place now for all Primary School children A curriculum overview is sent out on a termly basis so that parents know a little more about what their children will be learning about

Curriculum Enhancement Trips out and visits are planned and booked for each class to enhance their experience of various curriculum areas Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in a residential trip, Year 5 to Whitby and Year 6 to High Adventure Outdoor Centre near Skipton We believe that where possible, hands-on and practical learning provide the best opportunities for the children to develop

Extra Curricular Activities We have various extra curricular clubs happening in school – these are free of charge when delivered by staff within school: Monday – Netball for Y5 & 6 Tuesday – Staff meeting after school – no clubs Wednesday - KS1 Art Club/KS2 Art Club - Football for Y5 & 6 - Skipping for children/parents and staff Thursday – Choir Friday – no clubs Guitar Club will run for Year 5 on 2 lunchtimes a week We hope that a Rugby Club will run one lunchtime a week for KS2 and that a multi sports club will begin for KS1 children

Breakfast Club This began last week and runs from 7.45am – 8.45am If you would like a place(s) for your child/ren, please see Mrs Tempest, the Breakfast Club Manager The cost is £3.00 per day

Homework We fully believe that children should be allowed to be just that, ‘children’ and that there is a balance to be struck between leisure/play time and the discipline of homework The regularly reviewed Homework Policy outlines that homework that is set and completed on a ‘little and often’ basis serves the following purposes: - To consolidate learning from that day or week - To engage the children inn some independent work - To prepare them for the demands of homework and independent study in the years to come We believe that homework should not be laborious and a waste of time Learning Logs are an opportunity for children to explore topics of interest for them or develop their general knowledge
