Development History. 1987: 26 acres of vacant land opposite International Convention Centre. Proposed site for Brindley Place. Consortium paid 23 million for the development rights and most of the money was used to build the National Indoor Arena. The whole development would cost 200 million. 1989: Contracts exchanged between developers and the city council. 1990: A major share holder pulled out of the development in fear the development wouldn’t be worth much when it was completed. 1990: It was decided to re look at the original plans and finance each part of the development as it was built.

Development History cont. 1991: Press informed of new proposals for a high quality mixed use new development. The development included 19 restaurants, shops, and bars. The development also contained 120 homes and 1,100,000 square feet of offices which would create 6000 jobs. 1992: Obstacles included financial problems and the discovery of a rare bird. Both were overcome. 1993: Argent Group Plc. Purchased Brindley place from developers. 1993: Development well underway. 1994: Waters Edge phase opened which included bars and restaurants.

Development History: The Buildings. One of Britain's largest mixed use development sites. Built upon Brown Field land as a way of reviving a declining Birmingham, located along the canal side where derelict factories and disused buildings once stood. Brindley Place is an example of a successful Inner City Regeneration project.

The Buildings: Vodafone Located at Number 1 Brindley Place. The building consists of 68,553 sq ft of office space spread over 5 storeys. The building fronts Broad Street and is located between a former church and the Brasshouse.

The Buildings: BT Located at Number 5 Brindley Place is used as BT’s regional Headquarters.

The Buildings: Lloyds TSB Located at Number 2 Brindley Place. Lloyds TSB employs over 600 people. The office covers 75,000 over a six storey building and is located in Brindley Place Central Square.

The Buildings: Berkley Group Located in Symphony Court. Berkley Group have built 123 houses and apartments and provided the first opportunity for city centre living at Brindley Place.

The Buildings: Sea Life Centre A 15 mn pound Sea Life Centre which opened in 1996, and features over 30 displays.

The Buildings: Other Buildings 3 Brindley Place: Property Consultants GVA Grimley and international serviced office provider, Regus. 4 Brindley Place: Bank Restaurant & Bar. 6 Brindley Place: The Thai Edge 7 Brindley Place: (unoccupied) 8 Brindley Place: 92,000 sq.ft of offices, situated below 35 fully serviced apartments, in addition to ground floor retail/restaurants units. 9 Brindley Place: Mixed use.

The Squares The 5 th and 6 th of Birmingham's civic squares. Main square: Design included a 90 metre tree lined area which could be used for open arts. Oozells Square: Adjacent to the main square, features include a running water feature and a series of stone sculptured seats.
