PERSONAL HEALTH & SAFETY

1.Hurricane Readiness should begin long before the event occurs. 2.Stock Your Home with Supplies A. 3-5 Days Water Supply B. 3-5 Days Non-Perishable Food Supply C. Battery Powered Radio, Flashlight, and Extra Batteries D. Prescription Medicines. E. Fill Automobile’s Gas Tank 3.Listen for Emergency Updates

PERSONAL HEALTH & SAFETY 4.Sanitation & Hygiene A. If there is flooding with a hurricane, the waters may contain fecal material from overflowing sewage systems and agricultural or industrial waste. B. Do not allow children to play in floodwater areas. 5.Work in Groups - use Buddy System. 6.Use Life Jackets / Safety Lines in fast moving water. 7.Be alert for open manholes 8.Use Chainsaw Safety Practices while removing Logs and Branches.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

1.Advice from Virginia Power A. If you are in a vehicle and Power Lines fall on vehicle - stay inside (If you are driving continue to drive away from line.) B.If you are outside the vehicle - Stay Away. C.It’s wise to be overly cautious. 2.It is not unusual in a disaster for more people to be killed by carelessness in the aftermath than were killed by the event itself. 3.Watch for submerged transformers.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY 4.If you discover downed power lines - Note Location (i.e. Street, Address & Approx. Distance to nearest Cross Street.) 5.If possible, obtain Pole Number or the Pole Number closest to downed wires. 6.Do not drive through standing water if there are downed lines in the water.

SNAKES

1.Many snakes, like other residents in the path of a major storm, may have been displaced and left homeless. 2.Displaced snakes can be found under debris scattered by the storm or in debris piles created during the cleanup effort. 3.Watch where you put your hands and feet when removing debris or inspecting structures. 4.If you encounter a snake, step back and allow him to proceed on his way. 5.What should one do if bitten by a snake? A. Stay Calm B. Get to a hospital as soon as possible. C. If the snake was killed, take it with you to be identified.

PERSONAL INJURY

1.Complete Accident Report the day of the accident to include Supervisors Comments. 2.If the Employee needs medical attention he/she is given Medical Authorization, the Employee picks a doctor from the panel listed on the backside of the form. An appointment is setup by Office Staff/Supervisor. 3.The Employee returns Original Authorization form to their Supervisor along with any other documents from doctor. 4.Supervisor to investigate and make recommendations for corrective actions. 5.Send four (4) copies of all documentation to the Department Safety Inspector (Pandora Allen).

VEHICULAR ACCIDENTS

1.Call C.P.D. 2.Call Supervisor 3.Post Accident Drug and Alcohol Test (AR# 28.8) 4.An Accident Report will be completed the day of the accident. A.An Employee needs to provide detailed information to explain the accident. B.The Supervisor is required to review the accident information with the Employee, offer additional comments, and recommend corrective action.

VEHICULAR ACCIDENTS C.A copy of the Accident Report will be forwarded to the Employee’s Division Head. D.The Original Accident Report and eight (8) copies of all paperwork will be turned into the Department Safety Inspector (Pandora Allen). 5.If someone at the accident scene is being transported to the hospital in an ambulance, the Director, Division Head, and Department Safety Inspector are to be notified even on weekends and after hours.

CHAINSAW SAFETY

Remember not to work on any trees until the utility company has been contacted and the lines have been de-energized. 1.Anyone using a Chainsaw must have: * Current Chainsaw Training Certification Card. * Current CPR & First Aid Training Certification Card. 2.Anyone running a Chainsaw must wear the following PPE: * Chainsaw Chaps * Hard Hat with Full Face Shield and Ear Muffs * Safety Glasses (if no face shield) * Gloves * Steel Toe Boots / Shoes

CHAINSAW SAFETY 3.Anyone working in the area where a Chainsaw is being operated must have: * Current CPR & First Aid Training Certification Card. 4.Anyone working in the area where a Chainsaw is being operated must wear the following PPE: * Hard Hat * Ear Plugs * Safety Glasses * Gloves * Steel Toe Boots / Shoes

CHAINSAW SAFETY 5.Special Equipment needed at a Chainsaw Operation: * Chainsaws (equipped with a chain brake) * OHSA approved Logging First Aid Kit * Drinking water and cups * Fire extinguishers
