Important Points: To master some useful expressions: E.g. every four years; take part in; compete etc. To get some information on the Olympic Games.

Difficult Points----The Attributive Clause E.g. The old Olympic Games from which the modern games came began around the year 776BC.

Look at the following pictures, and give the name of these sports Side-horsefencing Weight-lifting Ice hockey

The Olympic Rings They are five rings, interlocking, on an all white flag, symbolizing unity and peace among the five continents of the world

Comprehension to the new text: 1) According to paragraph 1, how often do athletes from all over the world take part in the Olympics? 2) Are the Winter Olympics usually held 4 years before the Summer Olympics? Every 4 years. No. It’s 2 years before the Summer Olympics.

3) Read paragraph 2, 3 and 4, try to recount the history of the Olympic Games. The old Olympic Games began around the year the year 776 BC in Greece. At that time the sports were only a few, running, jumping and wrestling. And women were not allowed to take part in the Games. After about 393 AD the Games stopped. Until 1896, the modern Games happened. They were held also in Greece. And the athletes are more, and so are the sports.

4) According to paragraph 5, what’s the motto of the Olympic Games? Swifter, Higher, Stronger. It means that every athlete should try to run faster, jump higher and throw further. They do their best to win medals.

Why does the author say “to hold the Olympic Games is a rich prize for a country”? Cause if a country can hold the Olympic Games, it will attract millions of people to visit it, and consume in it. E.g. stay in the local hotels, buy things in the stores, have meals in the restaurants, see the places of interest and so on.. Many new sports grounds, hotels, stores, building, roads will be built for the Olympic Games. More jobs will be created to the local people. In a word, The Olympic Games stimulates the development of the economy in this country.

. Words and Expressions in the text: 1) every four years: 每隔四年 Here “ every” is used to indicate regular occurrence at specified intervals, it means “each”. The buses go every 10 minutes. ( 公共汽车 每隔 10 分钟一辆.)

2) take part in / join in/ participate in How many Chinese athletes will take part in/ join in/ participate in the next Olympic Games? 下届奥运会中国将有多少运动员参加 ? Attention: “join” and “join in” “Join in” is used to indicate to take part in some activities, the same as take part in and participate in. “Join” is used to indicate to be a member of something. E.g. I joined the party last year.

3) Compete: v. to try to win ~ against/with sb in/for sth Competitor n. the person who compete Competition n. match, game E.g. Deng Yaping will compete with Wang Nan in the final round for the championship. They are competitors. And the competition between them must be severe. 4) more and more: 越来越多, 越来越 …… The more …the more … 越 …… 越 …… E.g. The car is running faster and faster. The sooner you start, the more quickly you’ll finish

4. Grammer___The Attributive Clause The old Olympic Games from which the modern games came began around the year 776BC in Greece. The flowers that you sent to me are beautiful. The man who you talked to yesterday is Mr. Brown. I’ll never forget the days when we stayed together.

The function of the Attributive Clause: To modify the antecedents. The position of the Attributive Clause: After the antecedents. The connection between antecedents and the Attributive Clause: that; which; who; when; where.
